Look Back in Anger

By John Osborne

Directed by Gillian Pitt

27th - 30th May 2009

This classic play from the 1950's spawned the term "angry young men" to describe Osborne and other writers of his generation who employed harshness and realism in their drama. It follows the tempestuous relationship between Jimmy Porter, an intelligent but disaffected young man, and his upper-middle-class wife Alison. Alison's snooty best friend (Helena Charles) completes a stormy love triangle, and an amiable Welsh lodger (Cliff) attempts to keep the peace. Osborne's characters are cruel and merciless with one another, tearing one another's heads off one moment only to plead for understanding and love in the next.

Pack of Lies

By Hugh Whitemore

Directed by Maureen Beven

22nd - 25th July 2009

Based on a true story, the plot centres on the relationship between Bob and Barbara Jackson and their friends and neighbours Peter and Helen Kroger. The suburban cosiness is shattered when Peter and Helen are arrested and charged with espionage. This play is not only a tense and enthralling thriller, but also a sensitive study in how repeated lying can undermine even the closest of friendships.
